I bought a new domain name which I was going to use to develop a new project I had in mind. I thought I might as well let it sit on top of my main website that I use to present myself to clients. Happy with my days work I went to get on a train to meet with a friend who works in marketing.
On the train I received a notification of an e-mail informing me that someone had installed a website on hosting. Even stranger still I received another e-mail saying that it been removed. I checked my main website. All my content had been destroyed!
I found out that someone from tech support had violated my hosting package by installing a website on top of a website that already existed. Thus destroying all my content. All I got from tech support was an explanation about happened, but they never decided to undo the destruction that they have caused. I was furious, but anger only weights one down.
So I had work on developing a new website, identical to my last, to be my new main website that I use to present myself. I was able to use PHPMyAdmin to look at my old database for some of my content. So not all was lost.
When I was a senior web developer for a company, we didnt have these kind of shenanigans. But this is the price you pay when you rely on tech support to manage your hosting. The main lesson learned is to always back up ones work. Even if you have paid money to a hosting company to protect your website form random acts of destruction, chaos can always from within.
